And why and when, and what age does one need to do this?
Dr. George Klauber
An imperforate hymen is ideally opened up if and when diagnosed. Pediatric urologists and surgeons perform a variety of perineal, urogenital & cloacal reconstructions so we have by far the most experience and expertise.

In brief: Not recommended

A pediatric surgeon has training in a host of areas but not in gynecology.
I would seek a pediatric gynecologist or a gynecologist with several years of experience. Gynecologists understand the anatomy better.

And why, and at what age does one need to have this done or do this?
Dr. George Klauber
Pediatric urologists have the most experience and expertise between baby's labia. The anatomy of a hymen is musch simpler than the anatomy of ambiguous genital ambiguous genitalia, urogenital sinuses, distal vaginal atresia and cloacal anomalies which are managed by Pediatric urologists and pediatric surgeons and not by gynecologists.

In brief: Sure

A pediatric surgeon should be well versed in the procedure.
A general gynecologist also should have the appropriate skill set to solve this problem. It is in general a simple problem to solve. Be sure to find someone you feel comfortable with and that answers all of your questions.

In brief: Perhaps

Gynecologists would do more of these type of procedures and i would recommend seeing a pediatric gynecologist or a gynecologist as oppose to a general ob/gyn.

Only the occasional pediatric gynecologist has experience and expertise in pediatric genital reconstructive surgery. An imperforate hymen is about the simplest pediatric GYN procedure other than division of labial adhesions so that most pediatric gynecologists can perform this, especially when diagnosed in an older child approaching puberty. Gertainly not adult general GYNs.
