In brief: Specialty
Orthodontics is a specialty area.
However, there are many ways to obtain the knowledge and experience necessary to include orthodontics in a general practice. Specialization is not necessary to complete orthodontic care with excellence. Many fine dentists perform orthodontics within the scope of a general dental practice.

An orthodontist takes 2-3 years of advanced training in orthodontics. A good dentist can take any number of orthodontic courses as a general dentist perform very fine orthodontics.
Dr. Arnold Malerman
Although many very fine General Dentists do Orthodontic treatment, there is a major difference between a generalist and a specialist. General dentists take post-graduate Orthodontic classes, totaling probably not more than a few hundred hours, over their professional careers. They then do some orthodontic treatment as part of a primarily restorative dental practice. The Orthodontic Specialist takes a post-graduate full time residency, totaling 3,000-6,000 hours of intensive immersion in the specialty, followed by the same post-graduate courses that the generalist takes. The Specialist then limits their practice to that specialty exclusively. As a result, the level of basic understanding differs, and the level of accomplishment differs. Orthodontists, for the most part, do a higher level of care than the generalist. Who would you rather set your broken arm, your family doctor or an orthopedist?

The specialty is officially known as "Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics" which is a dental specialty.
It focuses on the movement of teeth, the correction of malocculions of etiology of dental. skeletal, and the combination of both. It also deals with the normal/abnoral growth and development of the cranofacial complex. Normally it takes 2-3 years of training AFTER dental school.

An orthodontist needs to complete dental school so every orthodontist is also a dentist.

Orthodontics is a dental specialty.
An orthodontist is a dental specialist focused on the achieving the best dental & skeletal relationship for the patient. Many patients believe that orthodontics is mainly a cosmetic aim. However, this is a misconception b/c this is not the only goal. Some other goals include but not limited to: better hygiene, improving TMJ relationship, prolonging life of teeth.

In brief: Specialty
Orthodontics is the oldest speciality of dentistry (2nd oldest in medicine).
Not only is additional training of 2-3 years in residency required, but most states also have specific licensing for specialists. Equating a few courses on a few weekends to a full time practice and continuing study of the speciality is inappropriate and may be misleading.

In brief: Orthodontics
It is a specialty in dentistry.
Primarily concerned with the assessment of tooth and jaw position and their problems. Most often known for tooth movement to correct malocclusions and create a natural appearance and alignment of teeth without crowns, veneers, and bonding. We often have patients have orthodontic treatment to better align teeth before reconstructing their teeth.

In brief: Specialty
Orthodontics is one of the 9 recognized specialties of dentistry.
An orthodontist will have at least 2, 000 hours of specialty training after obtaining their dental degree, and will limit their practice to orthodontic treatment of malocclusion, guiding crania-facial development, and giving patients the best possible smile by tooth and jaw movement.

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that deals with moving teeth to correct misalignment, typically by using braces.
Besides moving teeth for esthetic purposes, the main reason is to enhance a patients bite, so the teeth are in ideal alignment.

To become an orthodontist you must first be a dentist. Then usually you complete 3 more years of additional training in a residency program. Just think of a heart surgeon who is a medical doctor but goes thru additional training to become a heart surgeon.

In brief: Speciality
Orthodontics is a subdivision of dental training.
All general dentists have limited training in dental school if they were trained in the United States. Many general dentists today have taken extra training so that they can treat individuals with braces or something like invisalign. An orthodontist, is a "specialist" who has extensive training in this discipline in dental grad school.

In brief: Orthodontists
Are graduate dentists who following their internships return for an additional two or three years of study.
At that point the new orthodontists are examined and certified by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). Their efforts are directed to correcting the tooth and jawbone abnormalities so that their patients can have normal function - not to mention a dazzling smile

In brief: Specialty Care
While orthodontists are dental specialists with around 3 years of training after the 4 years in dental school, orthodontics is not necessarily performed by an orthodontist.
A general dentist is perfectly capable of performing a wide range of orthodontic treatment with the proper training.
