If you're willing to go under the knife, then you have the discipline to lose weight on your own. Here's a list of the complications. http://www.weightawareness.com/topics/doc.xml?__topic_id=111&doc_id=1422 Notice one of them is death, in 1/330 patients. Nobody ever died from "eat right and get some exercise."

In brief: Pros weight loss

Weight loss surgery has come a long way since the early days.
In the past 40 years, surgeons have perfected the different methods for performing the surgery, the methods of selecting appropriate candidates, how to trouble shoot complications from the different procedures, and how to coach people post-operatively. The surgeries are currently safer than heart or hip operations with a 90% success.
