How long should I take suprax (cefixime) for gonorrhea?

Single dose. Cefixime (Suprax) is no longer recommended as routine gonorrhea treatment; a shot of ceftriaxone is the drug of choice. However, cefixime still is usually effective. The recommended dose is 400 mg single dose, i.e. take all at once. It always must be combined with a second antibiotic, usually azithromycin single dose or doxycycline for 7 days. Check with the doc or clinic treating you.

If I've gonorrhea and I have to take suprax (cefixime), (cefixime) i'll take 400 mg at once? If or not, how long should I take suprax (cefixime) for gonorrhea? Suprax (cefixime) is dangerous?

Not the treatment. Back when we treated gonorrhea with oral drugs, we used a single dose. But now there's too much drug resistance, so the recommended treatment is a single shot of ceftriaxone, 250 mg . Read more...
All at once. Dr. Gallant is correct, ceftriaxone is recommended. However, cefixime (Suprax) probably will work. Take all 400 mg at once. It is entirely safe, virtually no side effects ever. You also should have been given a second antibiotic, either a single dose of azithromycin or 7 days of doxycycline. If any doubts or questions, check with the doctor or clinic treating you. Make sure partner(s) get treated. Read more...

What are the chances, that suprax (cefixime) can treate the gonorrhea (if no chlamy)? If I take (how long?) 1x 400mg is equal if I take 2x 200 mg in the same tim

Suprax (cefixime) Should be effective against gonorrhea, but it depends on locality. If your doctor prescribed it, it is probably effective against your local strain. 400mg is 400mg no matter how many pills you take, so you should be ok. Just use condom next time. Read more...
Not ideal treatment. All gonorrhea should be treated with two drugs, even if no chlamydia is present. Cefixime 400 mg usually would work by itself, but not reliably. Return to your doctor or clinic for additional treatment; or, if more than 2-3 weeks have gone by, at least be retested to know you were cured. One 400 mg pill or two 200 mg pills are the same treatment; it's the total dose that matters. Read more...

Is it ok to take suprax (cefixime) 400mg then take zmax 1g to treat gonorrhea and chlymidia? Or should be taken together?

WHAT DID THE. Doc say who put u on both that doc should ahve told u or u should have asked your doc, i tell my pts they can take both together , but I have very few pts who get both if these at the same time and i assume your partner is being txed and no one should have intercourse or other things until both of you have been retested and found to be negative and if u get pain or fever call your doc asap. Best together... ...but it would be OK as long as they are taken within 1-2 days of each other. If longer than that, I would recommend re-treatment with both antibiotics at the same time. However, cefixime is no longer recommended as the treatment of choice. It usually still works fine, but best to have a ceftriaxone injection (plus azithromycin or doxycycline). Read more...

My gonorrhea is clearing up. And I hardly see the white pus coming out of my penis. But I still urinate frequently like every 2hrs. Do I continue with cefixime or take a single dose of ceftriaxone?

Ceftriaxone standard. Cefixime is no longer recommended for treatment of gonorrhea because of resistance. Although it sound like you're getting better, the appropriate treatment would have been ceftriaxone. Read more...
Close cousins. If taking Cefixime properly, then should be as effective as ceftriaxone. Challenge is how long you have been on treatment, since discharge should rapidly resolve--if treating "all" of your stds. Unfortunately, they like to hang out in groups, so you may have more than one and it may not be impacted by cephalosporins. Complete the recommended treatment and be sure to get recheck for anything left. Read more...
