In brief: Treating symptoms
Palliative care is treating symptoms associated with a disease.
Sometimes palliative care may include chemotherapy or radiation to help with those symptoms. We are finding that people who have good palliative care throughout their cancer treatment live longer and have a better quality of life.

Well to most peo;le, palliative care means making the patient comfortable and abandoning aggressive treatments. It initially was mostly related to patients with cancer when it was pretty certain that the patient had no chance to improve. It has over the last few years been extended to other types of patients. One should clearly understand if you want this, that you will just be made comfortable.

There are now extended ideas of palliative care beyond end of life and just being comfortable. The main idea now, is to manage symptoms that might not be addressed as well as they could be. Also this program is designed for family support and goal of treatment planning

In brief: Unable to cure
When a disease has reached a stage where it is not able to be cured with any intervention, and it is eventually fatal, palliative care is done.
The palliation of a disease involves treating the associated problems like pain, swelling, weakness, without being able to resolve the underlying problem.
