Unknown. Failure of the fetal neural tube to close results in a neural tube defect (ntd) such as meningocele. The definite cause is not known, but inadequate maternal Folic Acid levels are associated with increased risk for ntd's.
Abnormal development. meningocoele is caused by a failure of the neural tobe to close normally, leaving part of the spinal cord open.
