In brief: Child eye cancer

Retinoblastoma is a malignant tumor of the retina which is seen in children.
It currently has one of the highest cure rates of all childhood cancers 95-98%. It used to be treated by removal of the affected eye or radiation, but now more advanced eye sparing techniques are successful.

In brief: Cancer of eye

Retinoblastoma is a cancer of the back of the eye.
It shows up during childhood, and can affect one or both eyes. About 1/4 of cases are due to an inherited gene (rb1). It is curable in over 90% of cases. Treatment involves radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery; sometimes it requires removal of the eye. The rb1 gene is associated with other cancers, most notably osteosarcoma, a type of bone cance.
