In brief: Difference in method

Smartlipo is a brand name for a laser that melts fat.
With regular liposuction no laser is used, and the fat is removed using small, hollow tubes, called canulas, and suction. Smartlipo involves the melting of fat by the laser, followed by the suction of the melted fat.

In brief: DumbLipo v SmartLipo

Modern liposuction incorporates tumescent liposuction.
Fluid is used to tumesce the fat. A small cannula vacuums out the fat. Smart-lipo is a brand name laser liposuction machine that uses a laser to "melt" fat and heat the skin. This adds more risk, and does not seem to provide any additional benefit. Article here: http://bit.Ly/i20fxf . It is better to choose a good doctor than a procedure.

In brief: Laser melts fat=burn

Straight liposuction mechanically removes the fat.
The "smarlipo" uses heat to melt the fat and then it is suctioned. A concern wtih all high energy lasers ("hot") is the potential to burn the skin. When fat melts it turns to grease (remember krisko in a hot skillet?) which can rapidly transfer the heat to the surface creating a full thickness internal burn; solution: temperature monitoring.

In brief: Lipo vs Snart

Liposuction destroys fat by using vacuum to aspirate the fat from the body whereas smartlipo uses lasers to destroy the fat without necessrily removing it.

In brief: Liposuction

Is suction of fat with cannulas.
Smart lipo adds a laser component to this.

In brief: Heat

Traditional liposuction uses mechanical force to push a steel instrument (cannula) through the tissue and then negative pressure to pull fatty tissue into the cannula.
Smart lipo uses a laser (lipo laser or lipolysis laser) to break apart and even liquefy/melt some of the fatty tissue. This makes it easier (and possibly more effective) to remove the fatty tissue.
