Need more data. There are a number of studies, either recently completed or currently running, looking at this question. Theoretically, vit e may provide benefit for HGB beta-e patients. However, at this time i would not recommend treatment, especially in a 5 month old baby. When the data matures and can be interpreted, perhaps vit e supplementation will be helpful. It causes moderate anemia, but most children with this condition seem to be able to cope with anemia well, and continue normal activities. Some of them, however, does need blood transfusions periodically. One vitamin he should be on later on would be folic acid. Since your baby is only 5 months old, you can wait till he is one yea old.
