In brief: Microcephaly = small
head, head circumference for age & gender less than 5th %ile.
Head growth reflects brain growth. Any genetic or other medical condition that disrupts fetal brain development from 3 wks. after conception- term can cause congenital microcephaly. Any medical condition that damages an infant or child's brain or genetic cause of degeneration or slow velocity of growth can cause acquired microcephaly.
