In brief: Multiple ways
Stomach juice in the throat can lead to irritation and inflammation.
This in turn can cause a variety of symptoms from excessive mucous (the feeling of post nasal drip) to hoarseness, throat clearing, feeling of a lump in the throat, swallowing difficulty, pain and even in rare cases - cancer. It is important to be treated. Throat reflux is harder to treat than heartburn requiring changes in diet.

In brief: Depends on severity
In cases of severe reflux, lots can go wrong.
You can get sores, scar tissue, narrowing and stricture formation of both the foodpipe (esophagus) and windpipe (larynx and trachea) leading to a whole host of problems. In mild cases, you can get just sore throats and some voice changes. Some studies show that reflux can even affect sinuses and the nose!
