Usually a prescription is optimized to your particular refractive error. Some people, especially after cataract surgery or LASIK surgery can just use over the counter readers as their refractive error has been minimized. If your individual refraction is equal in both eyes, you may be able to get over the counter readers. However, an initial first examination is the best course of action.
