Why do they give aminophylline to some preemies?

In brief: For apnea or prem.

Aminophylline may be preferred to enhance contractility in the diaphragm/lungs or benefit from it's bronchodilator properties.
Side effects-possible decrease in cerebral blood flow & concerns re: role in the occurrence or severity of necrotizing enterocolitis. Caffeine has a wider therapeutic margin-less chance of overdosing-thus it is the preferred agent.
