In brief: Use your fingers

If you are taking your own pulse take your second & third finger; place them over your neck below your chin and slide them to your side (opposite side of the hand you are using is easier) until you feel a pulsation.
You will need to put a firm pressure to feel it. Be careful to take pulse at the neck one side at a time as if you do both sides at the same time you could get dizzy.
