As many as 1/3 of all people diagnosed with breast cancer are found to have microscopic evidence of cancer in the lymph nodes under their armpit.
We use this information to guide further therapy, making this a critical part of breast cancer surgery. In the past, we would remove 10-20 lymph nodes to determine this. Now, this information can be found by removing a few "sentinel" lymph nodes.
