In brief: A diarrhea virus
Rotavirus is a virus that causes diarrhea, and is contagious.
It is one of the most common causes of children's diarrhea, but luckily, there is a vaccine now to protect against it. Babies and children who have gotten the vaccine should either not get the diarrhea or just get a milder case of it, when they catch the rotavirus.

Pediatrics
In brief: Viral GI infection
Rotavirus is the leading cause of infectious diarrhea in infants and children worldwide.
Symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting. The main risks to the child are dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Consult your baby's doctor about how to maintain your baby's hydration and what to feed him/her. Two vaccines are now available to prevent rotavirus infection.
