In brief: Symptom not cause

Diabetes is a cause of poor wound healing.
Occasionally an otherwise seemingly asymptomatic case of diabetes may be discovered due to a poorly healing wound.

In brief: Diabetes

It really is the other way around: diabetes can lead to poor healing wounds.
Many times, patients have wounds that will not heal, especially in the feet. When they finally seek medical help, it is discovered that they have a diabetic condition.

In brief: Are related

Poor wound healing and diabetes are related.
The relationship is complex. Diabetes, especially type 2, is often undiagnosed and/or undertreated. So it is usually the diabetes delaying the wound healing. However, if the patient is not fully aware of the magnitude of risk with diabetes, it seems like the wound came first and caused the diabetes. Both diabetes and wounds are treatable.
