In brief: It shouldn't

Some discomfort is to be expected, but no, it shouldn't hurt a lot.
Having said that, everyone has a different pain threshold and things are relative. Discuss any issues or questions with your own dentist either before or during treatment. Dentists always want their patients to be comfortable.

In brief: Not really

At first when the braces are tightened, yes there is some discomfort but usually that goes away and patients are fine.

Hurt a lot? Not really, though pain is subjective and experienced differently by everyone.

In brief: No

Using the new light wires, there is not a lot of discomfort.
Progressive heavier wires are used as the teeth straighten. If too stiff of wires are used at the beginning there can be a lot more pain.

In brief: Brace soreness

Pain varies from person to person.
Most people get sore from braces when they first get them but they do not feel a lot of pain.

In brief: Some

More so for adults than for kids, but it's manageable.
Its more sore than painful. Keep your mouth immaculately clean, don't damage your braces, and follow your orthodontic specialist's advice to the letter and the discomfort will be very easily tolerated and of short duration.

In brief: They can...

Everyone has a different pain threshold and metal braces can differ so much that it is not really a one answer question.
Most people find them to be somewhat painful. Invisalign braces are a much more comfortable alternative for most people and today they can work for most cases.
