In brief: 2 years.

Internal medicine is a specialty that requires a 2 year residency.
Any doctor can use "general practice" to signify they are in the business of caring for the public. Most internal medicine specialists prefer general internal medicine. We provide care for the older, sicker patient and the more complex diseases of adults. If over age 50 you should consider seeing one of us.

Internal Medicine

In brief: Internal Medicine

Internists should be offended if someone refers to them as a "general practitioner." internists undergo rigorous training with extensive hours on call in the hospital with very sick patients.
I worked up to 100 hours many weeks in residency. We have exposure to multiple sub specialties in residency and to be board certified, must pass a difficult exam with a 70% pass rate. Gp = med school grad.
