In brief: Not usually a cure

Most bran avm embolizations now are performed with a glue like substance injected in to the avm blood vessels through a tiny catheter (like a miniature straw) which then hardens in to a cast (onyx).
This can be curative in small avms but in the majority of cases it is used as an adjunct to radiosurgery or open surgery.

In brief: It can work

Embolization is a technique of placing a catheter through the circulation up to the area of the avm. Them a foreign body such as a piece of fibrin that will form a clot is injected into the avm to clot it.
L this will eliminate the avm from the circulation.

In brief: Decrease/stop flow

Before surgery embolization can make it a less bleeding procedure.
It can also be used in combination with other treatments including radiosurgery. In general, it's function is to decrease/stop flow through the malformation.
