When the liver malfunctions, there is a buildup of yellow bilirubin in the blood stream which stains the tissues.
The whites of the eyes, being so prominent, reflect this early in the course and yellowing eyes sometimes becomes the first sign that the liver is not working well. Doesn't happen with artificial eyes.
