In brief: Insulin resistance
Gestational diabetes is the result of excessive sugar and carbohydrate intake which causes high blood sugar levels, which then make your Insulin levels rise.
Plus the hormone changes in preg make prob worse. . Over time the chronically high Insulin levels lead to Insulin resistance and you will need to make higher and higher levels of insulin. You must improve your diet or you will end up with dm.

In brief: Hmmmm, well
Gestational diabetes is caused by Insulin resistance, the body not "listening" to Insulin available.
This is a problem related to fats: intake of dietary fats, triglycerides (fats in the blood), fat in the liver, and body fat, especially the fat found in the middle (abdomen/tummy). Overweight/obesity at the time of pregnancy is the biggest risk factor for gestational diabetes.
