In brief: Doctor should check
A 24 year old is young, and should be able to do outdoors activities without symptoms in the hands.
If the fingers swell after activities, it may be a good idea to make a doctor's appointment, and then do the activity just before the appointment, so the doctor can see the swelling. Sometimes swelling is just from using the muscles, which would be normal (increased blood flow causes "swelling").

In brief: Fingers swelling
This may depend on the mechanics of how your tissues work.
Some people may have an increased risk of swelling when stroked. This is called dermatographism. If you run your fingernail along your forearm you may ge a raised red swelling. With this trauma your body releases histamine and this causes the swelling. This may be occuring in your hands. With shoveling your body may release histamine.
