In brief: Way too broad

That question can't possibly be answered in 400 characters, or 400 words, or 400 lines, or even, if you're a neuroscientist, in 400 pages.
Some researchers spend their entire careers studying just one type of neuropathy. If you want to educate yourself, I recommend starting at http://www.neuropathy.org.

In brief: Many types!

Diabetes, B12 deficiency, heavy metal toxicity, drugs (medication side effects), vasculitis associated with autoimmune diseases are all causes.
However, most types are idiopathic, meaning no cause is found. Excellent relief can be found with cymbalta, lyrica, savella, (milnacipran) and off-patent gabapentin.
