I was an avid runner before; how can one get back to shape after having a child?

In brief: Just start

Just start.
Aim for 20 minutes of effort. If you have been away for awhile, start by run/walking, maybe a ratio of 1 min running and 4 min walking. String 4 of those together for 20 mins. Each week, increase the running and decrease the walking. Shoot for 3-4 sessions per week. Once you can run for 20 mins. Increase the time/mileage by 10%. Stretch. Do core work. Warm up. Cool down. Enjoy.
