Child had neonatal meningitis but then develops normally. He is 12 months now; would there still be a risk of brain damage?

In brief: Follow up mgt

It is a good indication of recovery that your son is meeting his developmental milestones during his first year. I would recommend that he have a hearing test as part of his office visit, and his management should include detailed developmental, neurologic and audiologic assessments.

In brief: Possibly

The issues with meningitis often depend somewhat on the germ involved, how quickly it was recognized & treated if indicated.
Most of the cases i've dealt with did well. At 12 mo you may have an idea about motor skills & if progressing normally it is encouraging. Good emotional responses like parent preference & stranger awareness signal thinking skills. However, it will be many years before u can kno.
