In brief: Hard to Say
The exact causes of multiple sclerosis (MS) are unknown.
It's believed to be an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. In MS, this process destroys myelin, the fatty substance that coats and protects nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord.

In brief: MS
The cause of multiple sclerosis is still unknown.
A huge amount of research has been done and many facts have been discovered, however the exact cause is still unknown.

In brief: Not well known
The cause of this autoimmune disease is unknown but the prevalence among women versus men is growing.
This association is believed to be due to lack of pregnancy or late first pregnancies or insufficient sunlight and vitamin d. Also some associate the use of Amino Acid supplements and meat/dairy products with it but this has not been proven definitively.

In brief: The mystery
Ms is an autoimmune disorder, associated with genetic and environmental influences.
But we know that 99.5% of patients have had exposure to ebstein-barr virus, that vitamin d-3 deficiency may be a risk factor, that living north of latitude 42 increases incidence, and that cigarette smoking may be another risk factor. Recent correlation with adolescent obesity.
