I have a ventral hernia but my doctor said not to get surgery. Should I worry?

In brief: Not necessarily

Hernias are fairly common.
It depends on the size and location of the hernia and your overall health, weight, diabetes, heart conditions. It depends if you had already had surgery at the same site. Hernias can be observed if small or not causing symptoms. You can also get a second opinion from another doctor.

Have you seen a hernia surgeon? If not, I would recommend that you do.

Agree with Dr. Rosen. Also, ventral hernias which have a large opening usually do not cause serious problems such as obstruction making it safer to hold off on surgery. However the best person to make this determination is a general surgeon.
