Syphilis can be passed from a mother to baby in utero.
This can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, low birth weight ; premature delivery. If untreated the baby can become deaf, have cataracts, seizures or die shortly after birth.

In brief: Yes

This can occur at any stage of pregnancy but is also treatable at any stage.
Most OB docs and hospitals screen for this disease routinely. Some in early pregnancy and also at birth. I have treated a case where mother gained the disease unexpectedly at 5 mo, and the infant had a syphilis induced nerve palsy at 6 wks when I first saw the kid.
