My boyfriend of a year has a herpes cold sore on his lip and he says he has never had it before. I don't have the virus. Can hsv-1 be dormant for years and suddenly outbreak?
Absolutely. Most people are infected with oral hsv as children and can indeed lay dormant for years and then emerge. You may even have it and not realize it, unless you have had antibody testing that is negative. Also, oral herpes and genital herpes are two separate viruses so this doesn't necessarily mean that he has been unfaithful or performed oral sex on someone else or anything of the sort.
The short. Answer is yes it can be dormant for a long time.
I need help, I have had a scar on my top lip for about over a year now and I don't know if it is a cold sore/HSv-1. Any insight?
Oral herpes. If you had a typical herpes outbreak at that spot, maybe that's the cause of the scar. Otherwise, HSV isn't the cause. If you have oral herpes, it is not active (and low risk of transmission) until and unless you have a fresh outbreak with new blisters or sores. Up to half of all adults have oral HSV1, so you wouldn't be alone. A blood test can tell if you have HSV1, but probably not necessary. Read more...
Blood work done my hsv 1-2 were high 12 and 1.24 what does that mean never had a break out cold sore look it up says herpes how so confused pls help?
Probably HSV1, not 2. Check the exact test you had. If it was HerpeSelect, and if your HSV1 result was 12 and HSV2 1.24: You have HSV1, but so do half of all adults; probably an oral infection, even without cold sores. However, probably not HSV2: most true positive results are over 3.5, and 1.24 is very low. So probably you don't have genital herpes. Repeat testing may sort it out. Good luck! Read more...
