Does taking propecia (finasteride) lead to a lowered testosterone level?

It doesn't . . . Finasteride (and dutasteride) will not lower your testosterone level. In fact, studies show that it might increase it. However, these two 5 Alpha reductase inhibitors used for enlarged prostate and in male pattern baldness could also lead to higher Estradiol level which could then cause gynecomastia (nipple sensitivity +/- male breast development), erectile dysfunction, and a reduction in libido. No. Propecia (finasteride) will not lower testosterone levels. It will, however, lower DHT levels and can raise estradiol levels. Elevated estradiol levels can lead to gynecomastia and/or breast tenderness, and/or decreased libido. Read more...

Would propecia (finasteride) raise testosterone levels?

Propicia. Short term your total testosterone can rise but in general the testosterone levels stay nearly the same as they did prior to starting it. The Dht falls with Finasteride by blocking the enzyme that changes t to dht. Read more...

What happens if propecia (finasteride) blocks testosterone, doesn't this mean that propecia (finasteride) will turn a man physically weak like a boy?

5ARI & DHT. So let's get this right. Finasteride, sold as Proscar & Propecia, along w/its competitor, Dutasteride, sold as Avodart, (dutasteride) do not block testosterone but rather conversion of T into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Therefore, neither 5 alpha reductase inhibitor (5ARI) will make a man physically weak like a boy. However, by blocking T's conversion into DHT, it may raise one's estradiol (female hormone) Read more...

I’m on testosterone replacement therapy. Will asking my dr for finasteride for hair loss offset any gains from supplemental testosterone?

Not exactly. Finasteride prevents the conversion of testosterone to dht. This only occurs in certain tissues (scalp/skin ; prostate). It is thought that too much Dht causes hair loss. Using Finasteride shouldn't effect your energy level or muscle mass, however there are reports that it can effect your libido. Read more...

Where I'm taking Propecia (finasteride) for hair loss would I still be able to build muscle lifting since Propecia (finasteride) lowers dht and testosterone?

Propecia (finasteride) Hi RHyde, There have not been any significant studies that I have read that show any correlation between propecia (finasteride) and decreased ability to build muscle. It is possible that other side effects may interfere with your muscle building activities. These include, but are not limited to, dizziness, drowsiness, and swelling. Read more...
It does not. "Propecia" blocks conversion of testosterone (your muscle-builder) to a related molecule that's more involved with hair loss. I'm glad you're lifting. Building lean muscle will go a lot farther in making you look good than where you do and do not have hair. Photo Guy doesn't care; it's masculine. And it'll actually keep you healthy. Best wishes.
