In brief: G6PD DEFICIENCY

This is the most common RBC enzyme defect that causes hemolytic anemia.
It occurs only upon exposure to certain drugs or food. Suspect it when symtoms appear like hyperbilirubinemia, increase in reticulocyte ct, low hemoglobin, of african, mediterranean or asian descent and exposure to offending food or drugs, g6pd will be low. Hemolytic anemia is episodic not chronic.
