In brief: No carbs

A strict ketogenic diet is one in which you will release ketones which can be measured in the urine.
This occurs when carbohydrates are avoided completely and only protein and fats are eaten.

In brief: Protein and Fat

A ketogenic diet is a diet that is mostly protein and fat and very little if any carbohydrates.
Since your body runs on carbohydrates as glucose, it has to break down fat for energy when you dont take in enough carbs. The by product of the fat breakdown is ketones. They are eliminated in the urine.
