In brief: Sinus Arrhythmia
This sounds like a normal variation that is called sinus arrhythmia.
.. Its simply the change in heart rate associated with the respiratory cycle. Some kids have and exagerated heart rate change... During inspiration vs expiration.

In brief: Probably normal
If this worries you or your child has any associated symptoms like exercise intolerance, than have him seen by your doctor. You may need to see a cardiologist.
There is something called sinus arrhythmia in children that is very normal. The heartbeat is irregular and can sound like you describe. It causes no problems. An ekg can clarify everything if you are concerned.
