In brief: Good oral hygiene

Brush teeth at least twice a day; floss between teeth; rinse mouth with mouthwash to help control bacteria.
If condition has advanced to point of swelling & pain, make appointment with dentist, who can evaluate how severe the condition is & recommend/provide appropriate treatment.

In brief: Dental visit

Your only option is to see your dentist and have this condition treated or the problem only becomes worse and lead to loss of teeth.

In brief: See your dentist

It is probably best to see your dentist for an evaulation and treatment.
Otc antibacterial rinse, regular brushing/flossing, peroxide toothpaste/rinse may help, but likely not going to be adequate. Oral health is quite important, so i would not neglect it. Good luck.
