In brief: Genital herpes
If a woman with genital herpes has no active lesions at the time she goes into labor, a vaginal delivery is safe.
Women with active herpes at the time of labor are delivered by c-section. Valtrex (valacyclovir) beginning at 36 weeks is being used to decrease the risk of active herpes at delivery.
