In brief: Helps depression.

Cymbalta (duloxetine) is an antidepressant and is a serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It helps with major depression especially with an associated chronic pain.
Nortriptyline has a similar mechanism of action except that it is a tricyclic antidepressant. If you're taking both, that maybe the reason that Cymbalta (duloxetine) is dosed at a low dose.
