In brief: Orthopedic supports

Afo is an abbreviation for ankle-foot orthotics.
They are prescribed when someone has weakness in the ankle such that walking is made difficult. After a fracture, a leg operation, or a stroke the ankle may not recovery sufficient strength to support someone standing & walking. The afo will provide external support allowing near normal ambulation.
