Did this eye doctor see your child and noted something? Or is this a generic statement that all preemies need an eye examination? Some preemies are exposed to oxygen which can affect the retinal vessels and other preemies may have other eye problems.
This may just be a friendly suggestion and is a reasonable idea but probably not an alarming one.

A premature infant may have underdeveloped eyes or other birth defects which could permanently alter vision! if exposed to oxygen immediately after birth to save its life, a premature infant is at risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity (rop).
Either way, prematurity is an absolute indicator for an eye exam by a pediatric ophthalmologist or retinologist soon after birth!
