In brief: Treat cause
Interstitial lung disease (ild) has many possible causes and some do not progress.
For example inhaled substances, drugs, arthritis, and infectious causes can often be treated if the offending agent is identified, exposure is stopped and appropriate treatment started. Autoimmune disease causes can be treated. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cancer, or unknown causes may progress more rapidly.

In brief: Depends on type
There are several types of interstitial lung disease and the prognosis and rate of progression of lung disease depend on the type of disorder causing it.
Most of them are chronic slow to progress and may take years before significant impairment of functional status occurs. Talk to a lung specialist to get more information about your case and its prognosis.
