In brief: Months to years

There are 2 types of gallstones: 'cholesterol stones' (caused by excess cholesterol in bile from high fat diet, etc.
.) and 'pigment stones' (caused by excess bilirubin in bile due to liver disease). A patient who has gallbladder 'dysfunction' (doesn't empty) will concentrate bile causing stones. Pregnancy , rapid weight loss diabetes or liver disease may accelerate the process.
