An evaluation for spd involves standardized testing, detailed clinical observations, and parent-report measures.
If a multi-disciplinary team is involved, the evaluative process may also include a general health and physical evaluation, speech/language evaluation, psychological evaluation. See the site for plenty of more detailed information. It is quite comprehensive. Best wishes.

In brief: History or testing
Processing problems of the brain (sometimes caused by strokes) can sometimes be diagnosed by history, especially descriptions from family members or friends.
Other times, neuropsychological testing is needed to make the diagnosis.
