In brief: Aspergers

Seek out a licensed psychologist who is familiar with the spectrum. Here is a video on assessment http://www.

In brief: May be moot

Asperger's is being dropped as a diagnosis among many mainstream physicians.
The focused mind's a gift if wisely used. The real question is whether junior can learn to do something that's harder for him than most other people -- read other folks, relate to them, interact more easily and naturally. This can be taught by today's methods -- and who wants a diagnosis of a mental illness?

Asperger's syndrome is being seen as on the spectrum of autistic disorders. To be properly diagnosed, start with your pediatrician who can refer you to a specialty center if necessary. Full evaluation includes input from physical/occupational therapists, psychologists, developmental pediatricians. There are other disorders that resemble autism. Although Asperger's was included in the psychiatric diagnosis manual, it is not considered a mental illness but a neurodevelopmental disorder. The advantage of a diagnosis is access to federally mandated services and support through public schools and state rehabilitation departments.

In brief: Asperger

Please talk to your pediatrician, after examining the child he/she needs torefer the child to a developmental pediatrician and then the diagnosis of aspergers is to be given.
