It is not all or none.
In general with bad copd, carbohydrates make you make more co2 which is harder to get rid of so we say limit simple carbohydrates. Also you may want to avoid sedatives (i.e. Alcohol) particularly prior to sleep as this can worse breathing. You want to avoid heavy meals because it may make your diaphragm work harder to breath.
