In brief: Skin and system

Since chicken pox (varicella) is a viral disease patients often have a prodrome of non-specific viral symptoms (fever, feeling bad, etc) before the rash develops.
A patient is contagious until all of the lesions have crusted over.

The chickenpox rash goes through three phases:symptoms 10-21d raised pink or red bumps (papules), which break out in different spots over several days, fluid-filled blisters (vesicles) 3-5 days, forming from the raised bumps over about one day before breaking and leaking, crusts and scabs(7-10 days)which cover the broken blisters and take several more days to heal.
