I have severe insomnia caused by lexapro. What can I take together to make me sleep: zzzquil, nyquil, benadryl, (diphenhydramine) melatonin, clonidine?

Call doctor. In my practice, with my patients, I have rarely seen anyone develop severe insomnia because of lexapro (escitalopram). They may have had insomnia previously, and it's more noticeable as the depression improves. In any event, if you are experiencing side effects from a medicine, call your doctor for an appointment to discuss this in person and in detail.
First, Make sure you take the Lexapro as far away from bedtime as possible if you think that is causing the insomnia. Then think about other things like perhaps taking the Adderall too late, caffeine, too much screen time, etc that can also keep you awake. It is ok to take melatonin and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) if necessary with what you've got on board. Clonidine too but only if your doc has prescribed it.

Yes. It is not a good idea to mix all these drugs together since no one really knows what the outcome of the interaction may be given some many variables. If you have had so much problem falling asleep, consider getting a sleep study which may reveal the cause. Read more...

I took NyQuil about 1.5 hours ago and I still feel terrible and cannot sleep. Can I take Benadryl (diphenhydramine)? If not, can I take an over the counter sleep aid?

Same thing. They all contain Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (or similar) and thus taking another brand is likely doubling up. It probably won't hurt but may or may work either. If this is a persistent problem, then you need to have better sleeping habits (avoid bright light in the evening, no caffeine after noon, no vigorous exercise near bedtime etc). Read more...

Sleep depravation one night led to a chain of sleepless nights. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) sleep hygiene melatonin and no stimulants won't help how can I stop the chain?

Insomnia. There are tons of different sleep aids available, but at this point your insomnia is also caused by the fear/anxiety of not being able to fall asleep. I've had good success with short as needed use of Lorazepam in select patients. It works like a champ for them up to a week and then they are able to sleep on their own. There's a concern of them being addictive, but short and as needed use is ok. Read more...

Yes. There are no drug interactions, however I would not recommend using the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) routinely. Practice good sleep hygiene. No TV, video games, texting etc within an hour of bedtime. Keep a regular routine. Avoid caffeine. Consider seeing a sleep specialist if persists ( or psychologist if you are concerned that stress or anxiety are the cause). Read more...
Yes and no. The answer to your question is yes it is safe. The next question that comes to my mind though, is why she needs a sleep aid every night at age 11.
