In brief: Vaccine & healthful

If a vaccine is available, if and when bird flu pandemic strikes, taking the vaccine would be the best defense.
In general, healthful living, good nutrition, non-use of tobacco and alcohol would provide general protection. Precautions for avoiding contact with infected persons, rigorous hand hygiene and perhaps prophylactic use of anti-viral therapy.

In brief: Vaccination

Get a vaccination if available.
If a new strain occurs not covered by vaccines, you should avoid public places that are enclosed, wash your hands frequently and wear a mask when out in public.

In brief: Rest, nutrition.

This is from influenzavirus a, and like other flu, tends to more heavily affect weak, immunocompromised patients.
Good nutrition, and healthy rest should provide a person with a strong resistance to most, if not any flu. It would also help not to travel haphazardly to any areas where this is more likely to be prevalent, or to minimize exposure to people who have traveled to those areas.
