What can cause a baby to have a fever and low white blood cell count?

In brief: Might be a virus

Low white blood cell counts can have different significance depending upon the particular situation.
In a normal child with fever and low WBC it often suggests that this is due to viral infection, but there are other potential causes and the family doctor or pediatrician may want to follow this up with repeat testing, depending upon other findings.

I would add that the age of the baby matters too. Babies less than 8 weeks of age have immature immune systems. You doctor can review the specifics of your baby's situation with you.
