In brief: Nerve compression

Carpal tunnel syndrome is median nerve compression in the carpal tunnel at the base of the palm. Increased pressure in the confined space of the carpal tunnel causes compression of the nerve resulting in numbness of the thumb, index, long, and half the ring finger.Common causes are underlying tendonitis, overuse and repetitive use, pregnancy, and diabetes or hypothyroidism are predisposing factors.

Genetics clearly plays a major role too and having a first degree relative with CTS is a major risk factor for getting it. Over-use and repetitive use are over-rated as causes. There probably is a mildly increase risk if your job involves 10 hours a day of heavy and continuous use of vibrating tools or immensely repetitive strenuous grip (14 hour sheep shearing shifts are a good example I think)

number one risk factor is history of cervical spine disease ie. arthritis, nerve root compression and disk herniation

In brief: No one knows

There are lots of theories to the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome.
But, no one knows. We know of certain conditions like Diabetes and thyroid problems that can predispose you to carpal tunnel syndrome. The truth is that we do not have conclusive proof that the computer causes carpal tunnel syndrome.
