Why is an epidural hematoma so deadly?

Risk of Herniation. Epidural hematoma entails blood building up outside of the brain. Because brain is confined within rigid skull, accumulation of blood will gradually cause an increase in pressure within the skull cavity & compress brain tissue; it can even cause the brain to herniate out through the skull where the spinal cord originates, leading to a coma and/or irreversible brain damage.
Large blood clot. Epidural hematomas are deadly because they can accumulate very rapidly. These frequently arise from a tear in an artery along the lining of the brain-the dura. As this is arterial, blood comes out very rapidly. It can reach a point where there is significant compression on the underlying brain. This leads to brain dysfunction. This frequently occurs over the temporal region.

When are you in the clear from life threatening complications after mild concussion like epidural hematoma, etc. My CT scan was normal. So was exam.

Prob in clear. You can have delayed subdural hemorrhage several days after trauma but it is not common. If your initial ct is negative you should be in the clear. If you develop new or worsening symptoms then a repeat scan may be warranted. Read more...
Not the same. The epidural space is in the spinal column and the skull. An epidural hematoma is a medical emergancy in both places. If a ct scan was normal you did not have one. A concussion can happen without any bleeding in the head. Side effects from the concussion, headache, blurry vision and nausea, should be taken seriously for 2-4 weeks. If they reappear or worsen seek medical attention. Read more...
